Porter Stokes has served the AUGUSTA CHORAL SOCIETY as its Artistic Director since 1999.  He is retired from a career in education that included brief stints in middle and high school positions, then most of his career was spent in higher education.  He has been a member of the following organizations while professionally active: NASM, MENC, ACDA, PAM, and NATS.

While with the ACS, we have been privileged to perform the following together:
  • Requiems (Mozart, Fauré, Duruflé, Brahms, Rutter, Verdi, Cherubini (interrupted by pandemic);
  • Magnificat (Bach, Rutter);
  • Stabat Mater (Dvorak, Rossini, Jenkins);
  • cantatas and smaller extended works such as Nänie, Shicksalslied, the Handel Coronation Anthems, Beethoven Choral Fantasy, Testament of Freedom, Finzi In Terra Pax, 
  • oratorios: Messiah, Creation, Carmina Burana, Jenkins The Armed Man
  • Mass and Missa brevis settings by Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Puccini, and others;
  • Amahl and the Night Visitors and opera choruses;
  • concert medleys of Broadway musicals (Rodgers/Hammerstein, Webber, Bernstein, Sondheim, etc.)
  • settings of the Te Deum, Gloria, and psalm settings by multiple composers;
  • Christmas "cantatas" by Susa, Holst, Vaughan-Williams, Finzi, Wilberg, Bass, Charpentier, Bass;
  • and hundreds of smaller compositions by classical and not-so-classical composers, including selections for topical and thematic concerts
